SMU already has one quarterback committed in the Class of 2014. But it appears the Mustangs will be taking two signal callers and adding a traditional pocket passer would be ideal.
Carlsbad (CA) quarterback Christian Chapman fits that mold and picked up an offer from SMU earlier this month.
"My high school head coach called me over and told me that SMU had offered me," Chapman said. "He didn't give me very much information, but I was really excited. I haven't heard from the coaches directly, but I know they keep in contact with my coach. I plan on calling them soon."
Chapman says he wouldn't mind leaving home and playing college football on the Hilltop. He just needs to find out more information about SMU and hopes to take a visit sometime this summer.
"I know a little bit because I watched their documentary on ESPN and some games," he said. "I'm interested, but I just have to talk to the coaches and see what they're all about."
The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder passed for 1,899 yards and 18 touchdowns as a junior. Known for his accuracy and pinpoint passes, Chapman believes he would be a great fit in June Jones' pass heavy Run N' Shoot Offense.
"I really like that offense because I can throw the ball a lot. It would be fun to play in," he said. "I'm very accurate, and I think I have the tools to succeed in an offense like that. I can also bring leadership and just a will to win."
Along with SMU, Chapman also holds offers from BYU, Washington State and San Diego State, which is his current favorite because of his ‘strong relationship with the coaching staff.'
Chapman has visits to San Diego State and San Jose State scheduled for June.
This offseason, the three-star prospect has been working on his release and has lofty expectations for his upcoming senior season.
"I want to win the division and help us take state," he said. "I need to keep improving and working hard, but I feel I can definitely help us do that."
