4-Star Point Guard Interested In SMU

Lanphier (IL) PG Larry Austin talks about his SMU offer inside!

SMU is searching far and wide for a 2014 point guard, and SMU is searching far and wide for a 2014 point guard, and Lanphier (IL) star Larry Austin may just be that guy.

Despite originally being recruited by Jerrance Howard, who has left the program for Kansas, Austin says he is still interested in what SMU has to offer and hopes to strengthen his relationship with head coach Larry Brown.

"SMU is a good place. Coach Howard had been recruiting me, but I've also talked to Coach Brown," he said. "Coach Brown is a legendary coach, and I believe he talked to my dad recently. Overall, I like them."

Like most point guards, Austin believes he can learn a lot from Brown, who played the position and coached some of the NBA's best.

"I feel like Coach Brown can really help polish my game. He's a great guy too so he can help me develop not only on the court but off the court," Austin said. "He's got good coaches around him too so I think I can learn a lot from them."

The four-star prospect currently holds double digit offers including Illinois, Memphis, Missouri, Oklahoma State and Wake Forest.

But Austin says he has no timetable for a decision and no favorites, which means SMU is right in the thick of things.

"I really like what Coach Brown is doing with the program. He's making his team get up and down the court, and he's really developing their guards," Austin said. "I know they are moving to a bigger conference and have gotten some Illinois guys so that's impressive."

Austin hopes to make a visit to the Hilltop but will have to discuss it with his parents first. For now, he's primarily focused on his AAU season and had an impressive showing at the NIKE EYBL in Dallas.

Playing for the St. Louis Eagles, Austin averaged 14.2 points and 3.8 assists per game but feels he needs to ‘improve his overall game.'
