Ex-Rice Commit Has High Interest In SMU

Mesquite Poteet LB Denzel Thomas recently visited SMU. More inside!

When it comes to picking a future school, many factors play into high schooler's recruitment.

But for linebacker Denzel Thomas, nothing was more important than education, which is why the Mesquite Poteet product decided to initially commit to Rice.

But after a bit of a mix up with SAT scores, Thomas decided to rescind his pledge to the Owls, and is no longer committed.

"It was not a conscience decision, I just had a mix-up with some test scores, and so I decided to decommit until I get my SAT scores back," he said.

Thomas did say that while he is not affiliated with any school right now, he hopes to commit back to Rice once his scores are figured out.

But Thomas does hold high interest in SMU and after attending its camp recently, he was very impressed with what the Mustangs have to offer.

"SMU has a great campus, a great coaching staff and a great atmosphere." he said, "I've been talking with Coach (Tom) Mason about an offer, and he said it'll probably come at the end of summer but to just be patient right now."

Thomas went on to say that he does have high interest in the Mustangs, and even if everything is straightened out with Rice, if SMU did offer he would consider them heavily.

"As far as my recruitment, education is most the important. I want the best for my future, my future kids, their kids, and of course my mother," he said. "I love football with a passion, and want to play it for the next 20 years, and God willing in the NFL."

Although Thomas was once committed to Rice, one would have to think the Mustangs could be in contention if they do offer based on Thomas's stress on having prestigious academics in college.

For now, the 6-foot-1, 225-pounder says he is focused on preparing for the switch from defensive line to linebacker and getting ready for his final high school season.

"Because of the switch, I'm talking to my new position coach a lot and doing everything to prepare for being a linebacker, like focusing on speed, quickness and agility so I am better at running downhill and making the hit at the line of scrimmage," he said.
