FREE: Wyatt Commits To SMU

Wylie East DB Jordan Wyatt committed to SMU on Friday night!

If Jordan Wyatt's grandmother almost fell out her wheel chair when she found out he picked up an offer from SMU last month, who knows how she's going to react tomorrow when she finds out he committed.

On Friday night, Wyatt officially pulled the trigger and became the latest Mustang verbal pledge.

"We had just won our 7-on-7 game, and I told everybody that I going to commit to SMU," Wyatt said. "So I called Coach (Tom) Mason and told him. He was really excited and told me that he really wanted me. I was pretty excited too."

Wyatt also held offers from Air Force, Iowa State and Navy. But playing close to home and a quality education was too much for him to pass up.

"SMU has a great team, and the education there is top notch," he said. "If things don't work out in football, a degree from SMU guarantees a job. It's a very nice campus too. It's very exciting to know that friends and family can come watch me play."

The 6-foot, 170-pounder with 4.4 speed is expected to play cornerback at the next level but can also make the transition to safety. An athletic defensive back, Wyatt believes he can excel at both positions and so does Mason.

"He said where I want to be I can be whether it's at corner or safety. I down to play either one. Both are fine with me," Wyatt said. "I think I'll really enjoy playing for Coach Mason. We have a really good relationship."

Wyatt says his commitment is ‘pretty solid' and is planning on visiting SMU later this summer. With a commitment out of the way, Wyatt is focused on his senior season after helping lead Wylie East to a 9-4 record in 2012.

"My expectations are to have a great senior season and to do better than last year.," he said. "There is always room for improvement so this summer I'm just working on fundamentals. I'm ready to take us further than we went last year."
