Mason Keeping Tabs On McReynolds

Dickinson OLB Andrew McReynolds camped with SMU and is hoping for an offer

SMU has already picked up commitments from outside linebackers Lance Cottrell and Chris Jefferson in the Class of 2014. But the Mustang coaching staff is continuing to recruit multiple players at the position.

Andrew McReynolds, who plays both outside linebacker and tight end at Dickinson, could be the next prospect the program decides to offer. The 6-foot-4, 210-pounder camped with SMU in Houston this month and impressed.

"The camp was good. It was a lot of fun," he said. "We ran our 40-yard dashes and met up with the coaches again. I did shuttle drills then went with the linebackers and did the linebacker drills."

McReynolds credits the SMU coaching staff for keeping up with him consistently. That kind of relationship and trust are some of the biggest reasons why he has an attraction to SMU.

"I'm still getting recruited by Coach (Tom) Mason," he said. "I have a good relationship with him. We probably talk about twice a week."

McReynolds is also receiving interest from Arkansas State, Colorado, and Colorado St. He hasn't picked up an offer from SMU yet and although he's worried the Ponies are close to filling up at his position, he's remaining optimistic.

"SMU is definitely one of my favorites," he said. "I'm not really sure what's going to happen because I think they just picked up another commit at linebacker."

Fall will be a crucial time for the SMU coaches to stay on all their recruits and invite them to watch games. McReynolds is hoping to get another chance to check out the Hilltop during the season after visiting for the spring game a few months ago.

"I do plan on coming to a few games in the fall and doing all that, so Ill be checking it out some more then," he said.

McReynolds finished last season with 25 catches for 433 yards and five touchdowns on offense to go along with 39 solo tackles and a sack on defense. He was named all-district on both sides on the ball but doesn't mind a switch to defense exclusively.

His size and 4.78 40-yard dash speed could make him a really effective and versatile player for SMU. If the coaching staff does decide to offer, McReynolds could decide to commit immediately.
