Earlier this month, Jason Philips met with Clear Falls athlete John Humphrey and made SMU one of first schools to offer him.
The 6-foot, 160-pound junior now plans on visiting the Hilltop at the end of the month to get a closer look at the program.
"I'm going to come up on the 28th for my first visit," he said. "I have never been there before so I'm not very familiar with SMU at all."
Humphrey impressed the coaching staff at the Friendswood camp and has kept in contact with Philips occasionally since then. Miami and Texas Tech have also offered the Class of 2015 prospect.
"I have been talking to Coach Philips a little bit," he said. "Not very often, but I would say we have a pretty good relationship. I also got a chance to meet June Jones, and I liked him."
Humphrey feels it's still very early in the recruiting process for him and expects interest to pick up soon. He says academics will be one of be the biggest factors in his decision.
"I'm looking for a school that has a medical field for me to major in," he said. "I am also just looking for a school that fits the type of person that I am. I would say it's a 3-way tie at the top right now between SMU, Miami and Florida State."
Humphrey ran the fastest 40-yard dash time at Miami's camp last week and made an impression on all the coaches in attendance. He says he understands his strengths and weakness better than most players.
"My speed is my biggest strength," said Humphrey, who doesn't plan on making a decision until next year. "I have run a 4.29 before (at the Texas Tech camp). I also have great cutback ability so I think I can play either corner or receiver at the next level."
Last season Humphrey, son of former Minnesota Vikings running back John Humphrey, caught 32 passes for 525 yards and six touchdowns and also returned two kicks for scores.
