Local 3-Star Nose Tackle Talks SMU Interest

Rowlett NT Cedric Johnson holds an offer from SMU but is he interested?

More often than not, big time recruits like the big time stage. They like to play in big time games in front of big time crowds on big time television.

2014 nose tackle Cedric Johnson is no different.

The 6-foot-3 280-pound run stuffer holds offers from Baylor, Oklahoma State, Kansas State, SMU, Tulsa, Washington State and Illinois although he has his eyes focused on three schools in particular- all coming from the same big time conference.

"As of right now I would consider Baylor, Oklahoma State and Kansas State as my top three," Johnson said.

Johnson has already taken trips to Waco as well as Stillwater and plans to visit Kansas State soon.

Johnson says he does have interest in SMU but has not taken time out to visit. The three-star prospect says he doesn't remember who his recruiter is and hasn't had contact with him but did see Mustang coaches at one of his spring practices, where he received the offer.

When evaluating schools he might be interested in, Johnson says three things stand out to him the most.

"Academics, how successful the football program is and the school that works best for me," he said.

With SMU not having much quality depth along the defensive line, the 6-foot-2, 285-pounder could bring some great attributes to the Mustang defense if he were to take a chance on SMU.

"I feel like I'm strong, explosive, quick for my size and can really clog up a hole," Johnson said.

The upcoming senior is looking to improve on a few of his weaknesses throughout the rest of the offseason, which he identifies as stamina during longer drives and his pass rushing.

Johnson says he plans to announce his college decision in Rowlett's bye week, which will come in the fifth week of the season.
