Devondric Meadows is a basketball player at heart.
Meadows' mother and father met by way of the basketball court in college and raised him to love and play the game from the time of his youth up to now.
But Meadows realizes that basketball may not take him to the next level.
The 6-foot-5, 240-pound defensive has impressed collegiate recruiters on the gridiron since his arrival at Lubbock Coronado and currently holds an offer from SMU. Although basketball is the preference for Meadows, going to college is one of his major goals – and he plans to explore every option that could take him there.
"I'll take as many options as I can get but I don't really know where I want to go right now," Meadows said. "When I came to high school, I wasn't even expecting to get a football scholarship. I thought I would maybe get one for basketball or something.
"Now, I just want to go to a good school and get a good education – one with a good coaching staff and good people to be around."
Meadows has heard good things about SMU especially pertaining to their academics - specifically in the area of study he has special interest in.
"I'm interested in SMU," Meadows said. "All my teachers and coaches have told me that it's not an easy school to get into. One of the things that I'm going to be looking for when I go to college is a good business school and Coach (Bert) Hill told me they have a good business program."
Hill visited Meadows in Lubbock to watch him practice in the spring and extended an offer in person on the same day. Since then, the two have had a fair amount of communication although the senior has not heard from Hill in about a month.
Two other schools are in pursuit of Meadows – Missouri and Tulsa. Both programs will make the trip to Lubbock to watch him live in action and could extend an offer at some point during the season
"I think it's possible especially with Tulsa," Meadows said. "I talked to the D-Line coach pretty frequently, and he said he's definitely looking forward to coming to see me play. I actually talked to him and Coach (Dave) Steckel (Missouri Defensive Coordinator) last night, and he told me that he was going to come and see me play too."
Meadows, captain and starting forward of the Coronado basketball team, also has lingering interest from Weber State as well as Wichita State for basketball.
West Texas DE Still Interested
