SMU's top priority is still adding an elite big man to its 2014 basketball class.
But it's no secret the Mustangs have made room in the past and were interested in a tweener in Isaiah Wilkins before he committed to Virginia. Now, SMU is considering adding three-star Houston Yates power forward Melvin Swift.
"Coach (Ulric) Maligi offered me about three weeks ago after the Xavier situation. He said they were really interested in me, and I was really excited," Swift said. "I don't know a whole lot about SMU right now, but my interest level is pretty high. I'm just looking for somewhere I can feel comfortable at."
The 6-foot-7, 190-pounder is more of a slasher than a true post scorer. Swift even admitted that he will likely be a three rather than a four at the next level. Swift committed to Xavier in November, but the two sides parted ways last month after the staff ‘felt like he wasn't ready yet.'
But Swift didn't let that affect his mindset. He believes he's ready to make an impact and develop quickly especially if he's in the right setting.
"I know Coach Brown is a great coach. He's someone I would love to play for because he's a Hall of Fame coach," Swift said. "He's coached in the NBA, and I think he would really help out my game."
Over the last four weeks, Swift has added five offers. But he says SMU is definitely one of his favorites not only because of Brown but the recruits he's been able to land. In fact, Swift and Keith Frazier played with each on the AAU circuit last year as a part of Houston Hoops.
"I think it's great that they landed Emmanuel Mudiay and Keith Frazier. It shows that the program is definitely on the rise," he said. "I've played with Keith before so it would be great to play with him again. I'm probably going to ask him how he likes it up there and stuff like that."
Swift plans on taking official visits to SMU, St. Joe's, UMass and UConn in coming week. This weekend, he made the trip to Pennsylvania for an official to Penn State.
"I really enjoyed my visit to Penn State. It was a great experience, and I really liked everything," Swift said. "My favorite part was just talking to the coaches. The staff was great, and they said they would love to have me and use me in a lot of different ways."
Swift says he will make his decision after he makes all his visits.
