Hill Targeting East Texas RB

Troup running back D'Luis West talks about his interest in SMU and more!

SMU defensive line coach Bert Hill always seems to be on the prowl for under the radar recruits in East Texas. And he's already getting a jump-start on 2015 Troup running back D' Luis West.

Hill recently began interacting with West through e-mail and invited him to one of SMU's home games this season. West gladly accepted the invitation and will be on campus next month.

"When Coach Hill e-mailed me, I was really excited," West said. "He told me that I could come to any home game this season so we planned things out, and I will be there for their homecoming game against Temple."

SMU is still interested in 2014 running backs such as Richardson's Kendrick Igbinoba and Beaumont Westbrook's Justen Hervey. But neither holds an offer, and it's looking more likely that the Mustangs will just wait till the next recruiting class to take a running back.

So West will definitely be a name to keep an eye on. Although West doesn't know too much about SMU yet, he's looking forward to learning more on his unofficial visit.

"Really, I'm interested in any school that's interested in me. SMU is one of the school that I'm really looking at though because it's close to home," he said. "I just want to keep in contact with Coach Hill, and I'm excited about seeing everything in person."

The 5-foot-8, 210-pounder, who runs a 4.56, is like a bowling ball on the field. His game has been compared to Maurice Jones-Drew of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Last season, he rushed for 407 yards and two touchdowns in limited action at Bullard Brook Hill.

Before the start of this year, West transferred to Troup and has seen his workload increase.

"My season is going great. My coach was very complimentary of my last game and is happy with what I've brought to the team," West said. "I feel like I can rush for 1,000 yards and help my team get to state.

"I feel like my size actually helps me in some ways because no one is ever going to get under my pads. I feel like I'm an exciting runner, and I can bring that to a Division I program along with leadership and an attitude that's all about helping the team."

Although West is new to Troup, he's familiar with SMU wide receiver Der'rikk Thompson, who also attended the small East Texas high school. West said he plans on contacting Thompson ‘in the near future' to find out more about SMU.

West has also been invited to see a game at Tulsa and is receiving interest from Missouri, Washington State and others.
