First 10 Min
Yanick Moreira came out with a ton of energy and his teammates responded. The Mustangs burst out to a 9-0 lead behind good defense and rebounding from Moreira and fast breaks orchestrated by Ryan Manuel and Nic Moore. Moreira could be seen diving on the floor after loose balls and his teammates quickly began to match his level of effort.
When Yanick left the floor, the Mustangs kept up their effort. Moore had a nice four-point play and Markus Kennedy bullied around the TCU big men. His big highlight of the opening minutes was a big block that led to a Williams lay up on the other end.
One problem that plagued SMU in the opening minutes was fouls. There were a couple of questionable calls, but SMU needs to do a better job not causing contact. Overall the SMU defense was stellar, allowing just 28.6% shooting in the opening minutes.
Keith Frazier came in off the bench and gave the Mustangs an offensive spark. He scored eight quick points (he was the scoring leader for SMU) and helped hold off a TCU rally that cut into the SMU lead. The offensive trend for the Mustangs this half was spreading the wealth; seven different Mustangs scored the ball.
The Mustangs did a good job on the boards with a 21-16 advantage in that category. Surprisingly Nic Moore led SMU with 8 rebounds. He also scored four points and dished two assists, also the leader in that stat for SMU. SMU assisted on eight of their 12 buckets.
SMU had nine turnovers in the half and will have to do a better job holding onto the ball next half. Defensively they did a good job limiting the Horned Frogs to nine of 28 shooting, but TCU shot 41% from downtown. This kept TCU in the game. SMU leads 30-29 after twenty minutes.
2nd Half First 10 Min Blog
TCU came out to start the half with a 7-0 run that gave them a quick six point lead. SMU kept playing catch up until a Nic Moore three pointer gave them the lead again. Moore now has 12 points to go with his eight rebounds and three assists. The offensive effort continues to be team-wide; only Sterling Brown has seen the court and not scored today.
The defense as a whole looked lost to start the second half but fortunately for the Mustangs TCU kept making mental errors and turned the ball over repeatedly. SMU did do a better job with fouls during this ten minute section than they had been doing previously but still are allowing TCU to shoot a high percentage from long distance. This is the only thing keeping TCU in the game at this point.
Frazier continues to be big off the bench for SMU. He has 11 points on 4-6 shooting. He's making a strong case to start the next game for SMU.
