Rapid Reaction: SMU Falls To Cincinnati

How it happened: SMU jumped out to 10-0 lead but failed to keep the momentum going. Chase Hover missed a couple of field goals, and Cincy quarterback Brendon Kay tossed a pair of touchdowns to give the Bearcats a 14-10 lead heading into halftime. The third quarter was all Cincinnati as the Bearcats kept the ball away from Garrett Gilbert and the SMU offense. But Gilbert showed plenty of heart, as he has all season, and willed his team back into the game. He tossed a pair of touchdowns and kept it himself for a 2-point conversion to cut the Cincinnati lead to three late in the fourth quarter. But Cincinnati recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

What it means: SMU will have to upset either UCF or Houston if it wants to get back to a bowl game this year. As stated all week, the Cincinnati game could make or break SMU's season. It broke it.

Side note: Three wide receivers topped 100 yards today. Keenan Holman led the way with seven catches for 142 yards. Darius Joseph was Gilbert's favorite target. He racked up 12 catches for 103 yards while Jeremy Johnson recorded 11 receptions for 102 yards. But big stats don't equate big wins.

Next: SMU will host Uconn next Saturday in a must win game. The Ponies cannot afford to fall to a team they should beat at home. The Huskies have had a terrible season and saw their coach fired earlier this year.
