How it happened: SMU played UCF extremely tough all game but in the end, the Ponies just couldn't pull the upset. Neal Burcham looked like a completely different quarterback after a terrible game against Houston. He was accurate and threw a 30-yard touchdown to Keenan Holman that gave SMU a 10-3 lead heading into halftime. But UCF came out firing in the second half. Blake Bortles gave scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and eventually gave the Knights their first lead of the game with a 15-yard scoring run late in the third quarter. SMU was unable to come back after Burcham left the game with a concussion in the fourth quarter.
What it means: SMU's is season is over. The Mustangs finished with a 5-7 record, their worst since June Jones' first season on the Hilltop, and will not be going for a fifth consecutive year.
Side note: It will be interesting to see what happens with June Jones this offseason. He says he has a contract extension in hand, but I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock into that. I think he's still very much on the hot seat.
Next: SMU will head into the offseason with a difficult decision to make and a sour taste in its mouth. It's clear the Mustangs are not ‘one year away' from being a BCS buster.
