Over the past couple of weeks, SMU sent out offers to a few local 2015 prospects including Flower Mound Marcus athlete Cade Erwin.
Erwin is the definition of an athlete. In the past two years, he's played everything from quarterback to wide receiver to safety. The 5-foot-11, 175-pounder tore his ACL as a sophomore but bounced back with all-district honors on both sides of the ball this season.
SMU was so impressed with his athleticism on tape that it became the first program to offer Erwin.
"My dad is my head coach at my high school, and he told me that the SMU coaches called him and told him they offered me," Erwin said. "I actually haven't talked to any of the SMU coaches, but I was beyond excited. When he told me, I started crying and getting emotional because it's always been a dream for me. "
Although Erwin is not aware of who his recruiter is and isn't extremely familiar with the program, he holds strong interest in SMU because of its prestigious academic reputation.
"Right now, SMU is very high on my list. I'm really big on academics, and I know SMU is a great school. It's also close to home," Erwin said. "My dad was really happy too. He said SMU has really turned it around and that they are on the rise."
Erwin hopes to get in contact with the SMU coaches soon so he can start building a relationship with them and learn more about what the program has to offer on and off the field.
Erwin also plans on talking to former teammate and SMU wide receiver Deion Sanders Jr. about the offer. The two played together when Sanders Jr. was a senior and Erwin was a freshman. That year, they both lined up at wide receiver and helped lead Flower Mound Marcus to the second round of the playoffs.
"It would be really cool to play with Deion again. I moved up to varsity and played the last seven games with him," Erwin said. "As a freshman, he was a guy I looked up to. I've been keeping up with his career and through that I've followed SMU."
Baylor and Texas Tech are the only other schools showing interest in Erwin, who says he will visit SMU in the near future, but his recruitment is expected to pick up in the spring. A jack-of-all-trades, Erwin is being recruited as a safety by SMU.
"My dad said they were offering me at safety. I think that's where my biggest upside is because of my instincts," Erwin said. "But I've played different positions, and I think I can play quarterback, wide receiver or even outside linebacker."
