Anthony Wilkinson -- goes by Sidney--- already has a leg up on the other SMU commits in the 2014 class.
Wilkinson spent a year playing cornerback at Army Prep, where he really honed his skills. He was expected to play for Army next season but decided it wasn't the place for him. So he started looking around and got in touch with SMU coach June Jones last week.
Jones invited him for an official visit this weekend. Wilkinson made the trip and committed on Sunday morning.
"Everything exceeded my expectations. It was great," Wilkinson said. "I met with Coach Jones in the morning, and he said I could play right away and that I was a good athlete. I told him I was committing, and he was really excited. I was ecstatic. It meant a lot to me."
Despite knowing Jones and defensive coordinator Tom Mason for only a short period of time, Wilkinson said he felt a connection to the two coaches and can't wait to suit up for them next season.
"Coach Jones seemed like a great guy. I respect him a lot. I really like how he runs his program," Wilson said. "Coach Mason was my recruiter so I spent a lot of time with him. He said he liked my length and versatility. He said corner was a position of need, and he likes that I'm fast and lanky."
The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder is originally from Oklahoma and was a two-way star at Lincoln Christian. As a senior, he recorded 60 receptions for close to 1,000 yards and notched 60 tackles.
A two-star prospect, Wilkinson picked Army over an offer from Air Force. While he never suited up for the Black Knights, Wilkinson gained valuable experience playing for Army Prep.
"I played the whole season against guys that were in junior college. High school seniors just play other high school seniors," Wilkinson said. "The extra year made me tougher, and my footwork got a lot better."
But now Wilkinson has a new home and is ready to officially be a Mustang.
"I really liked the people and the vibe. The basketball game was amazing. You can tell people are really excited about athletics," Wilkinson said. "My host, Elie Nabushosi, was great. He showed what campus life was like and told me about the things they do. I'm really excited about it."
