How It Happened: SMU started off both halves strong but was unable to keep up the strong performance. With Nic Moore playing limited minutes, the SMU offense often looked lost, especially against the Louisville press. SMU was really hurt by the guard play of the Cardinals. Russ Smith and Luke Hancock struggled in the first half but Chris Jones played well enough to keep Louisville in the game until the second half, when Smith and Hancock really caught fire. And while Markus Kennedy and Shawn Williams started off the game well on offense, Montrezl Harrell and Stephan Van Tresse did a good job of preventing the SMU big men from getting good position in the paint.
What It Means: SMU's dreams of the one or two seed in the American Athletic Conference Tournament are over but can still lock up the three seed by finishing the season with a win.
Side Note: Williams and Nick Russell were honored before the game with framed jerseys and a video montage. The students cheered each of their names and also chanted, "Thank you, seniors!" before and at the end of the game.
