Plano East's Austin Corbett has seen his recruiting increase lately, and SMU is of the teams hot on his trail. The junior linebacker from Plano, Texas has an offer from the Mustangs offer and attended their junior day.
"The coaching staff was great," Corbett said. "We got to tour the campus, and that was fun as well."
SMU linebackers coach Eric Daniels has been primarily responsible for recruiting Corbett.
"(SMU has) been talking to me since December, and I received the offer in mid-January," Corbett added. "I was very excited when I received the offer because it was my first one, and as far as playing ball there, it would be a great place to play."
Since picking up the SMU offer, the linebacker has added two more offers, from UTSA and Harvard. He also said that he has many other schools interested in him, with Michigan, Stanford, Iowa, and Oklahoma showing the most interest.
When asked if he anticipated some of those schools offering him, he replied, "I sure hope so; it would sure be great."
As for making a decision, Corbett said that SMU would have a bonus because they were his first offer.
"They were the first school to take a major interest in me, while other schools took their time."
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound linebacker and his Plano East teammates finished the 2013 season with a record of 5-5, but despite the record, Corbett said he saw some good signs from the team.
"Defensively, as a unit, I thought we were great. As far as my season went, I think I did pretty well. For next year, I hope to make our defense better."
Corbett did in fact have a strong season, finishing with 79 tackles, five sacks, 13 tackles for a loss, and an interception. He has also ran a 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds.
