For pass-happy coaches like SMU's June Jones, offensive line play must be strong. Fortunately, Jones and the Mustangs coaching staff brought in a 2014 signing class full of offensive lineman.
They are looking to do the same for next year's class, and one of their many targets is offensive tackle Matthew Weeks (Tyler, TX/Lee).
The junior lineman's coach, Darrell Piske, said that SMU has been looking at Weeks for about a year.
"It was last year I believe, as far as just when coach (SMU assistant Bert Hill) came through, last spring sometime," Piske said.
Hill is the recruiting coordinator for the Tyler area, and according to Lee assistant Jim Kerbow, he offered Weeks last May. SMU is still his only offer.
Weeks also visited SMU for its junior day in February. Kerbow said that Weeks was very impressed on his visit. He noted that Weeks was able to see the football facilities, the campus, and learn about the academic programs.
Kerbow also added that Weeks liked the close-knit community he experienced. He thinks SMU is a great program with great facilities and a wonderful community.
As for the offer, Weeks is buzzing.
"He's very excited about it," Kerbow said. "It's a good Division I program and pretty close to home. He loves SMU, and I think that's where he wants to go to school. He's been excited ever since they offered him."
