FREE: McCrary Commits to SMU

Patrick talked with SMU commit Billy McCrary about what made him commit earlier than expected!

SMU secured the third member of its 2015 Class on June 2, snagging Leander (TX) Rouse athlete Billy McCrary III. McCrary's first offer came from SMU in January of his sophomore year; he gave the Mustangs a big boost for being the first school to offer him.

"(SMU has) always been a top school because they were the first one to offer me, so that played a big roll," McCrary said.

"They were the first ones to believe in me."

McCrary gushed about SMU's football program, but he has some ambitious academic plans too.

"It's a great education," he stated. "I'm planning on majoring in business, and that's their strong point."

One of the other factors in McCrary's decision was his strong relationship with the coaching staff, especially with linebackers coach Eric Daniels. He said he talks to Daniels for at least an hour each time they call each other.

"Coach Daniels is great to talk to, and all the coaching staff is great to talk to," McCrary said. "I've been up (to SMU) a couple times and all of them are easy to get along with.

"It just felt like home when I was there. The coaching staff was really a big drawing point. Education-wise, it was a big drawing point too."

While the coaching staff is one big reason that McCrary said he will feel at home, SMU has another advantage in that department: his aunt lives right next to campus.

"My aunt owns a house right next to SMU, so that's pretty cool; she just bought one right there. Campus is nice too, it will be really beautiful."

McCrary had originally planned to commit at the end of the summer, but he said he felt great after committing at the start of summer.

"It took a little of the stress off, but then again, (I've) got to keep on working."

McCrary wants fans to know that he has a great drive to win.

"I don't want to lose. I hate losing, it's embarrassing to lose, and I'm going to make sure I do everything I can to help win the game. I hope I'll helping contribute to the team and helping them win games."

The other commits in the 2015 class excite McCrary as well. He said all of them are in a group chat with each other.

"With this class we're starting to build up, we're definitely going to have a chance to win some big games."

McCrary won't be changing his commitment; he characterized himself as a firm commit and said he does not plan on taking any visits to other schools. He says that he may get a couple more offers, but he is done with his recruitment.

"I'm happy where I am right now," he said.

Of course, McCrary will still visit SMU. He said he would be back on campus in mid-June, as well as later during the summer.

"I'm going to go talk to coach Daniels and look around the campus a little bit more. I think I'm supposed to go up one time when Kyle (Kearns) is supposed to come too."

McCrary said he also hopes to meet the rest of the 2015 class on a future visit. Besides SMU, he held FBS offers from Northwestern, Rice, North Texas, Bowling Green, New Mexico, UTSA, and Texas State.
