Whaley Talks SMU Offer

Beaumont Central 2016 ATH Devwah Whaley recently picked up an SMU offer. Scott got his thoughts on his offer from the Mustangs!

SMU has been on a recruiting tear the last two weeks, landing 10 commitments from 2015 players. The Mustangs, however, have yet to make any splashes in the class of 2016.

One player they could not pass up on offering in the class of 2016 is Beaumont Central (TX) athlete Devwah Whaley.

Whaley, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound bruising running back, has racked up offers from Memphis, Louisiana-Lafayette, Ole Miss, TCU, Missouri, SMU, and most recently Baylor since late April.

The rising junior has been talked about as one of the top running backs from his class in the state of Texas because of the way he runs.

"I would call myself a power back because of my size," Whaley said. "I'm big; I'm physical; I don't run away from contact, and I like to lower my shoulder."

Although Whaley has not been in personal contact with the SMU recruiter who offered him through his coach, he does know a little bit about the Hilltop.

"I know that they're a great school, academically, it's not too far from where I am, and their football program is pretty good as well," Whaley said.

Whaley would like to visit SMU, and obviously continue to establish a relationship with his recruiter, but he has no visits set for the near future because of his busy schedule of late.

Most recently, Whaley attended a camp at LSU and he hopes to receive an offer from the Tigers in the next few days.

Being only a junior however, Whaley has a long way to go before he makes his final decision, or gives a ranking to his SMU offer.

"As of now, I'm not sure (where SMU is on his list)," Whaley said. "I haven't really started putting schools in any kind of favorite order because I still have so much time."

Now an upperclassman, Whaley hopes to take on more of a leadership role for his team, as well as establish Beaumont as a series threat for a state title.
