Gailliard, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound rising senior, originally picked up an offer from wide receivers coach Jason Phillips and the Mustangs back in the spring, but decided to commit now after almost missing his opportunity to be a Mustang.
“At first, since they offered at the beginning, everything was just coming in and I was just trying to wait it out and see what other offers I got,” Gailliard said. “But then SMU closed their offer and I had to wait until they opened it back up. Once they opened it back up and after talking to my parents, I thought this was my shot so I had to take it.”
What separated SMU from Gailliard’s three other offers?
“Academics,” Gailliard said. “And on top of that I feel really comfortable with Coach (Jason) Phillips. I just like the coaching staff and obviously academics were a big part of it as well.”
Gailliard kept in touch with his recruiter, Coach Phillips, on a weekly basis throughout his recruiting processes, and while they did not discuss whether he’d play on the inside or the outside, Gailliard feels he’ll fit best on the inside for the Mustangs.
At the moment, the Mansfield, Texas native, who said he is as solid on his commitment as could be, does not have a set date for any visits to the Hilltop, but he does plan on making at least one trip for a game in the fall.
