K.C. Nlemchi Player Profile
Position: Running Back
Size: 6-1, 220 pounds
Year: Redshirt Junior (Lettered one year)
High School: Cinco Ranch HS
Hometown: Katy, Texas
Recruitment: A three-star recruit and an All-American by PrepStar Magazine as well as one of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s five 5A “Money Players.” Nlemchi was the 102nd ranked player in Texas according to Scout.com after rushing for over 1,200 yards and 18 touchdowns. Chose SMU over offers from Arkansas, Tulsa, Tulane and Utah.
2013 Recap: Nlemchi is another player that SMU fans have been wanting to see more of out on the field and they did in his sophomore season. Nlemchi rushed for 238 yards on 51 carries and a touchdown. Those numbers aren’t incredible by any means, but it was good to see Nlemchi finally get an opportunity. The SMU running game was pretty non-existent, but that really wasn’t Nlemchi’s fault. It would have been a nice surprise for the team to see Nlemchi really break out last season, but with his inconsistent carries and missing the last two games with an injury, SMU fans will have to see what Nlemchi can do in 2014 to rebound.
Outlook in 2014:Nlemchi is one of the more talented backs on the roster, but hasn’t been able to put together the blocking schemes and his talent to see the field. Now that the SMU backfield is suddenly crowded with Kevin Pope moving back over and incoming freshman Daniel Gresham expecting to get touches, Nlemchi will have to step up and take some carries back.
It will be interesting to see what opportunities in camp Nlemchi gets with the talent in the backfield, but if the spring was any indication, he’ll really have to battle to see the field with Pope handling most of the first team touches. If Nlemchi fails to climb the depth chart, SMU fans will have to start wondering whether they’ve seen the last of this high school star on the field for the Mustangs.
