FREE: Kaufman commits to SMU!

Billy talked with SMU's latest commit, Mitchell Kaufman. The Highland Park linebacker pulled the trigger after practice Friday.

SMU received its 13th commitment for the 2015 class when Mitchell Kaufman, a linebacker from Highland Park (Tex.) High School pledged Friday afternoon at SMU practice.

Mitchell talked about why he decided to pull the trigger and commit.

"Well, I wanted to get it over with before school, and I’ve had the offer for a while," Kaufman said. "I went to practice today and felt really good about it."

Kaufman talked more about the atmosphere at SMU on Friday at practice and what impressed him.

"I really liked it. The environment was just what I’m looking for. It was intense but they’re coaching and not yelling," Kaufman said. "They’re trying to get to you instead of just get at you. I really liked that. Coach Mason, he’s a really cool guy, I really like the way he does things."

Kaufman is extremely raw since he only has one year of football under his belt, but the staff thinks he could contribute right away.

"Yeah, he’s given me the impression that I can come in and maybe be an impact player as a freshman," Kaufman said. Not a starter, but he said I’ll have an early position if I do the stuff I need to do, and that’s what I’m looking for."

Kaufman will have to compete with next year's group of linebackers plus fellow class of 2015 commits Michael and Delontae Scott.

Some players want to get far away from home or just far enough, but Kaufman said he's really comfortable staying right down the street from home.

"You know, I really like Dallas, I’m just a homebody, I love to be here, and I love it, it’s what I want to do," Kaufman said.

Kaufman wasn't exactly excited about the whole recruiting process, which is why he decided to get it done so he could focus on his senior year.

"I’m kind of done with the game, it has been fun, but I’m not really into the game of recruiting," Kaufman said. SMU’s really a great place for me and I like it."

For Kaufman, he's focused on doing what he needs to do in school to get ahead of the curve when he arrives at the Hilltop.

"I’m really excited. I’m just focused on football and doing what I need to do in school to get ahead when I get there."

SMU was Kaufman’s only FBS offer, but he had a few FCS ones. He had some interest from Baylor.

He is rated as a two-star by Scout, but has only played one year of football. Prior to this year, he played for Highland Park’s basketball team. He is 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds.
