SMU falls to Memphis

Billy recaps SMU's -7 loss to Memphis on Saturday.

How it Happened

A 24-point 2nd quarter from Memphis blew the doors off this one. Paxton Lynch was surgical in his performance, going 17-of-23 for 307 yards and a touchdown. Memphis also rolled up 594 yards of total offense on the day. SMU quarterbacks completed just 13-of-33 passes overall. Luke Seeker and Prescott Line combined for 72 yards on 14 carries, while Memphis had 10 different rushers with Brandon Hayes leading the way. Hayes rushed for 101 yards and a score and Jarvis Cooper added 93 yards and two touchdowns.

What it means

SMU has officially been eliminated from bowl contention now. On the field, not much else has changed except Matt Davis may be really challenging for the starting position now. Davis didn't set the world on fire, but completed three of nine passes for 55 yards, but Davis did damage on the ground. Davis ran seven times for 46 yards, but missed a wide open receiver for a late game touchdown. SMU's inept on offense. It's not changing anytime soon no matter who starts.

What’s next

SMU has a bye next week before facing Tulsa on the road on November 8 with another chance at their first win against the struggling Golden Hurricane.

Side Note

SMU has had 18 scoreless quarters on the year. SMU's opponents on the other hand, have scored in every quarter on the season.
