2013-14 Recap

Wilfong was limited to largely a cheerleading role for the team during his freshman year at SMU. Over the course of the year, Wilfong played 9 minutes, scored six points and had three rebounds. The highlight of the season for Wilfong came when he scored his first collegiate points against Rhode Island on the second to last possession of the game. Despite the obvious lack of playing time, Wilfong continued to work hard and soak in everything Larry Brown had to teach him about the game.

Outlook in 2014

SMU fans should not expect to see much of an increase in minutes for Jonathan Wilfong this season. Expect to see Wilfong early on in the year for some of SMU’s home games, but as the year goes along his minutes will once again dwindle. Wilfong still provides value to this team. In practice, coach Brown expects a lot out of Wilfong and the intensity from Wilfong during practice shows everyone know he truly wants to get better. This season Wilfong needs to continue to practice hard and wait for his opportunities to arise, even if they are few and far between. One thing Wilfong could focus on improving is his shooting, as he is getting open looks in practice that could provide a positive contribution to this team if he can finish off some of the possessions with a bucket. Right now the shots are just not going down however.
