There were plenty of major prospects out there that SMU was in on and the Mustangs missed on a few while assembling the class. The staff gives you their picks for who would have fit well and would have been great additions to the class.
I would say Tyler Davis, but apparently SMU wasn't as close as it was to believed for Davis' services especially with Avery Johnson, Jr. doing a great job of recruiting for the Aggies. Thomas fits the mold of Markus Kennedy and would have been a terror down low once he got healthy and in-shape. Larry Brown could have really developed the big man and Thomas wouldn't have had to go far to get the coaching he needed to get to the next level. Another not-as-polished option would have been Prestonwood big man D'Jery Baptiste, Davis' teammate. Baptiste has elite athleticism even if he's still putting the basketball part together. Baptiste was also interested in a school that could help him become a diplomat for his home country and SMU could have certainly helped in that regard.
Scott: Tyler Daivs (Committed to Texas A&M)
Looking at SMU's class now, you've got to think missing out on Aggies commit Tyler Davis was the biggest miss by the Mustangs. Davis has truly come into his own now and is going to be a force down low for Texas A&M, and the Mustangs were considered to be in the lead for the big man's services early on. At 6-foot-10, Davis would've been a nice big man addition for the Mustangs and could've competed for a starting job as a freshman.
Patrick: Elijah Thomas (Committed to Texas A&M)
Elijah received interest from SMU before Larry Brown took over, but Brown and his staff recruited him hard from when they took over to when he committed to Texas A&M on Oct. 21. SMU will be a little thin in the frontcourt in 2015, so Elijah would have been a big help.
Hatts: Elijah Thomas (Committed to Texas A&M)
I believe the biggest name that SMU missed on was Elijah Thomas. I know he had his personality faults but this guy would have been a big pickup for SMU. There is no doubt that SMU needs another big guy from this class, leaving the door open for Thomas to be the perfect fit. Gilder was a big name that SMU was after but after SMU got Sedrick Barefield and Shake Milton, the need was quite as large and I think ultimately caused Gilder to go else where.
Demo: Elijah Thomas (Committed to Texas A&M)
I think hands down, you have to look at Elijah Thomas. We all know SMU needs a big man. When Shake Milton committed, we thought it would bring Thomas too, but we were wrong. Now, it seems that SMU will need to look for transfers or towards a JUCO big.
