How it Happened
SMU jumped out to a big lead right before halftime after a big mistake by USF right before half time. With SMU leading 3-0, Matt Davis found DE Justin Lawler in the front corner of the end zone to give SMU a 10-0 lead. SMU then capitalized on a muffed punt by Nate Godwin to get another field goal right before half and head into the break with a 13-0 lead and momentum squarely in their favor. In the 3rd quarter, it was all about SMU’s defense that continued to get pressure on Flowers. They were helped out by USF who kept shooting themselves in the foot with a couple chop block penalties. USF finally got on the board in the 4th quarter when D’Ernest Johnson took a pass from USF’s new quarterback Mike White in for the score on some poor tackling by SMU. Despite holding the lead for much of the game, SMU could not hold onto the lead late after another scoring drive by Mike White to give USF the 14-13 victory. The USF quarterback entered the game early in the 4th quarter and found Andre Davis with 4 seconds left for the winning score.
What it means
This is the second straight week that SMU has put together a nice performance. After a forgettable performance last week on defense, SMU frustrated USF QB Quinton Flowers but it was Mike White at the end who got to SMU. Despite losing to USF, SMU put together a solid performance but knows they missed a great opportunity to get their first of the season.
SMU now heads on the road to face UCF next Saturday. A time has yet to be announced.
USF struggled tonight with the “Chop Block” rule. While not all were accepted, USF was flagged four times for chop blocks that proved to be costly penalties for them.
