SMU falls to Gonzaga 72-56

Gonzaga topped SMU 72-56 on Monday night in a top-25 matchup.

How it Happened

Kevin Pangos got it going early for Gonzaga and the Zags never looked back. The Bulldogs were more physical than SMU down low and SMU didn't rotate well enough on the perimeter. Nic Moore was held to 10 points on 3-9 shooting and had three turnovers. SMU came out shooting 3-23 in the second half until Cannen Cunningham's bucket with just over seven minutes to go. SMU never looked comfortable in the tough atmosphere at Gonzaga. Yanick Moreira made his first bucket and then finished 1-11 from the field. Moreira got outmuscled down low by Przemek Karnowski for most of the night. Ben Moore had eight points at the half, but finished with just 11 points and fouled out

What it Means

SMU drops their first marquee non-conference game of the year. Gonzaga came out more physical, especially on the offensive glass. SMU has to get to more defensive rebounds in the future as that really hurt SMU tonight. SMU also looked out of sorts at time on offense as miscommunication led to a few turnovers in the first half on errant passes.

Player of the Game

Kevin Pangos played lights out to start the game, draining multiple threes in the first few minutes and finished with 11 points in the first half. Pangos continued his solid play in the second half as SMU struggled to defend his three-point range early in the second half. Pangos made two early threes in the second to set the home crowd on fire. Pangos finished with 17 points and sat a lot of the second half.

Side Note

SMU got outrebounded against Gonzaga 42-38. SMU never got it together on the boards and that really killed them.

What's Next?

SMU will need to regroup before it faces Indiana on the road on Thursday night at 7 p.m. CT on the Big Ten Network.
