How it Happened
The Mustangs got off to good starts in both halves, but SMU turned the ball over too much and gave up too many open threes, losing to Indiana 74-68. While SMU got solid contributions from Ben Moore (16 points), Sterling Brown (11 points), and Nic Moore (13 points), but in the end it was their defense that hurt them the most. Indiana Freshman James Blackmon Jr. (26 points) could not miss from behind the arc and the Hoosiers got just enough contributions from everyone else to put the pin in the coffin.
What it Means
The Mustangs came in this week as the No. 22 ranked team in the nation, but they sure didn’t play like it. The Mustangs will head into Saturday’s game 1-2, and have yet to prove that they can win big games on the road. This team is seriously missing Shawn Williams and Nick Russell.
Player of the Game
I wanted to put Ben Moore as the player of the game, but after his four turnovers I decided to go with Nic Moore. Moore hit shots down the stretch and kept SMU in the game with his 13 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds.
SMU had 19 turnovers. That is all.
The Mustangs return home and will have Friday to prepare for their matchup against Eastern Washington on Saturday in Moody Coliseum.
