How it Happened
After both team’s first two possessions it looked like SMU would be able to get their first win of the day. SMU then allowed 20 unanswered points before answering with a touchdown early in the second half to start their scoring streak. SMU scored 21 unanswered to go up 27-20 in the fourth quarter. After a Matt Davis fumbled, it appeared SMU could end up losing, but the team pulled together and finished the game to win. Behind Matt Davis’ record setting day, SMU got their first win of the year.
What it Means
SMU gets their first win of the season and sends the seniors and coaching staff out the right way. SMU avoided being the only winless team in the FBS as well.
Player of the Game
Matt Daivs:No doubt about it because the SMU quarterback was all over the field today. While Davis didn’t set the world on fire passing, he completed multiple third down throws and when he didn’t the passes were on the money and dropped. Davis led SMU in the ground game with a record setting day running the football.
SMU forced a season-high five turnovers on the day. SMU capitalized on those turnovers by scoring 17 points helping the Mustangs come back for their first win of the season.
Focus on the future. June Jones’ staff will move on to other opportunities while Chad Morris’ takes over an SMU program that struggled mightily this season.
