Wilson talks new SMU offer

By: Andrew Hattersley

D’erren Wilson, a 6-3, 187 pound class of 2015 wide receiver from Greenville High School, has SMU as a possible destination as he works toward deciding on where he’ll play next season.

The Mustangs offered Wilson when offensive coordinator Joe Craddock visited him at his high school and extended him the offer.

“I would put them in my top 3,” said Wilson, “I really like SMU, I think the new staff is going to turn the season around.”

His talk with Craddock gave him more insight into the plan for SMU.

Wilson is receiving a lot of interest from a variety of schools including Indiana, UCF, BYU, Memphis, North Texas and UTEP among others.

The senior wide receiver is coming off a good season and knows there’s a lot he can offer to the Mustangs next season.

Wilson gave fans a fairly simple idea of what he brings as a player.

“I’m a big receiver with inside receiver capabilities,” said Wilson.

As for why he has SMU in his top 3, one reason he had originally was Kyle Kearns but that is certainly not his only reason, among his others includes SMU’s newest head coach.

“Well that [referring to Chad Morris] and it’s not that far from home, good education, they have good football they just haven’t been playing that way for a couple of years, Chad Morris will change that around,” said Wilson.

Wilson says he has not spoken to Morris yet nor does he have any visits to SMU scheduled. The Greenville wide receiver does plan to visit later on in the year.

On Friday, Wilson visited North Texas. Wilson is a three-star prospect on Scout.com.

Gary meets new SMU assistant

By: Demetrio Teniente

Less than one week into the “Chad Morris era” at SMU, two things are abundantly clear.

This coaching staff leaves a lasting impression and they don’t waste time. It really is all about tempo.

Earlier this week, Archie McDaniel made a visit to Kimball high school in Dallas, just hours after being hired by SMU.

“As soon as everyone on the new staff got hired they were on it- they didn’t any time off,” Kimball 2016 DE Demerick Gary said. “Coach McDaniel had just got hired that morning and it was his first meeting.”

Gary is a 6’2” 240 pound strong side defensive end, who holds offers from SFA and Arkansas State.

One of the first things Gary noticed, was that McDaniel coaches the position he is recruiting for.

“That’s the good thing about him being the one recruiting me,” Gary said. “He is the defensive line coach. That’s a double plus for me, because I want to have a good connection with my defensive line coach before I get to the school, because some of the other recruiting coaches are DB coaches or linebacker coaches. So that was another thing I liked about him and he kept telling me how he wanted to keep me in Dallas. He made me feel like they were really focused on me.”

Gary says there was almost an instant connection with McDaniel, almost as if he was one of his friends. McDaniel was very relaxed and laid back, something Gary says is uncommon in his experience.

“Most coaches come in with the firm handshake and are real serious,” he said. “But he came in and was really cool. I have a really good feeling- he made me feel like they had some extra interest in me and he was a just pretty cool dude.”

Gary gets along with McDaniel, but he also sees the whole picture with SMU and he likes what he sees.

“Coach Morris came to change the program,” he said. “He has offered some great guys that schools are sleeping on. I feel like in a few years, SMU could be a very good team.”

If SMU were to offer the 2016 defensive end, he would have three offers, and he says SMU would warrant serious consideration.

“Now that coach Morris is there and now that I’ve met coach McDaniel…SMU would be up there in my top interests because I can see a great program being built,” Gary said. “And that’s kind of like [Kimball]. When I got here it was a building program. I don’t really want to go to a team where it’s already locked in; I want to go to a team where we can build something.”

Based on his meeting with McDaniel, an offer from SMU seems to be in Gary’s future. In the meantime, he is going to keep grinding away. “I’ve been talking to a few coaches and right now most of them are focused on finishing out their 2015 class,” he said. “I think when it gets closer to January the offers will start coming in. I can feel it coming soon, but I’m just going to be patient, sit back and wait for my time to come.”

Preston talks SMU offer

By: Demetrio Teniente

This summer, Ashton Preston was getting ready to enter his senior season playing defensive back for Edmond Santa Fe High school in Oklahoma. He hadn’t received any offers yet, but he was hopeful.

“It kind of came a little fast,” he said. “I went to [North Texas’] camp in the summer in Arlington. I did well and a couple days after, they approached me and said they wanted to offer me. I took a visit the week after I got offered and I just felt comfortable with everything that happened and I felt like it was the right time to make a decision. I just wanted to get everything out of the way so I could just focus on playing.”

It was July Second when he committed to UNT. Forty-six days later, SMU decided to throw their hat in the ring anyway.

At the time, June Jones was still the head coach, and running backs coach Steve Broussard was in charge of his recruitment.

With Chad Morris being named SMU’s new head coach moving forward, Preston didn’t know what would happen to his offer. And honestly, he wasn’t even thinking about SMU- until Van Malone contacted him.

“[The conversation] opened my eyes a little bit,” Preston said. “I’m still solid to North Texas, but yea, it caught my attention. It really did.”

Preston is 5’-10, 179 pounds, and sees himself as a big, long, and physical corner. He says that compared to last season, he has become a much more physical and really gets in the faces of receivers.

He is a solid defensive back and will be a valuable contributor to whichever program he ends up with in the end.

Even if Peterson doesn’t see him-self as a Mustang right now, he does think SMU’s hiring of Morris is a step forward for the program and did not hesitate to praise the direction the team is heading.

“I see SMU as a program that is about to blow up,” he said. “The coaches that they got coming in there are great and I can see them really turning everything around. I know in the past, SMU has gone through rebuilding phases, but I feel like this one is kind of different than the others. I feel like they are really going to get everything down and it’s going to go back to the old days.”

Preston is close friends with 2016 DB Max Wariboko, who picked up an SMU offer this week. Wariboko said the pair plans to trip to SMU together.

Wariboko paying attention to SMU after offer

By: Billy Embody

Oklahoma City Casady defensive back Max Wariboko has built a solid relationship with new SMU offensive line coach Dustin Fry. Wariboko called Fry after he heard about him moving to SMU and got good news.

“I’ve been talking about coach Dustin Fry. We were talking about the change at SMU. I called him (Fry) and said how’s the change?” the 2016 star said. “He was telling me how he’s felt welcome at SMU and through the phone he just extended me an offer.”

Tulsa, UCLA and Lousiville have also offered so far, but Wariboko spoke at length about what his relationship with Fry means.

“It’s important because he made my family feel welcome back at Clemson. When he was talking to my dad, my dad really liked Clemson,” Wariboko said. “They just talked a lot and my parents know that he’s going to take care of me and he’s not just a coach that I’m there to play football for. They liked him for who he was as a person and that’s important.”

SMU offers a great education, but that’s not the only connection.

“SMU because it’s a really good school and it’s not too far away,” Wariboko said. “I’ve got a friend of mine, Ashton Preston, and he’s got an offer too so playing with a friend there that’s a good opportunity. It just got my attention.”

Wariboko’s parents have a big affect on his decision, but distance isn’t a huge factor.

“They want us to stay close, but if we go far, we go far,” “Being close is always good. That’s important.”

After SMU offered, Wariboko is definitely paying attention to SMU.

“I knew SMU was a good business school and good academic school that’s all I know about it,” Wariboko said. “Now it’s definitely one I’m considering so it’s got my attention.”

Rebuilding on the Hilltop wouldn’t be an issue either.

“It would be great just knowing that I could contribute or help a great program. It’s just great. I’ve played against guys that played against guys like Daniel Gresham so I’m going to know a lot of people when I go there already so it’s kind of like a home. I like SMU already and it’s one of my tops.”

Even though Wariboko is a 2016 prospect, he could choose early.

“It’s all with my parents. If they don’t mind me choosing early, I’ll choose early, but it’s mainly up to me and them on where I’m deciding.”

Wariboko will visit with Preston, but doesn’t have anything set. The Waribokos hosted Chad Morris for an in-home visit Thursday.

Davis talks SMU

By: Billy Embody

DeSoto 2015 WR Akile Davis is committed to BYU right now, but got a chance to meet SMU head coach Chad Morris on his first day on the recruiting trail.

“I met him before. They were just there to see what was going on lately and just checking up,” Davis said. “He didn’t say much because I had to go into another room to go do something, but I just reintroduced myself and he let us know that he’s the head coach at SMU now.”

Davis met Morris last spring when he was at Clemson and couldn’t say enough about the advantage SMU’s new hire brings to SMU.

“It’s big. They have big advantage being so close and him being such a great coach,” Davis said. “His past and how he runs his offense, it’s an advantage.” While Morris didn’t offer Davis, Davis gushed about the style of offense he’ll bring to the Hilltop.

“It’s great. The offense he ran at Clemson is very similar to what we ran at DeSoto - the spread, kind of on-the ball, down the field - it’d be great.”

The hiring of coach Claude Mathis is a big move for SMU, but not as big as James Proche being committed there. Davis commented on the receiving corps SMU could have.

“I think it’d be great. We’d be one of the best with me and him and having that pipeline to DeSoto having other great receivers come, it could be crazy.”

SMU offers a solid education, even if the football program is rebuilding. “Education is great there. I know they’re probably at the top,” the 6-2, 195-pound receiver said. “Great football program and it’s building. They should do great things in the future.”

Davis talked about Mathis being added to SMU’s staff and the affect it could have on his recruitment.

“It would definitely impact it. It would make me look at pay some attention no doubt.”

With Bowling Green, Indiana, Maryland, Nevada, North Texas, San Diego State and Toledo all having offered, Davis could be a big add to SMU’s offense.

For DeSoto, the season didn’t end the way the Eagles wanted with their loss to Allen, but it was a solid season.

“In the beginning we were strong and we were kind of ahead of ourselves,” Davis said. “After that game (Cedar Hill loss), it got us focused and gave us a big piece of humble pie. We really got on track and focused on what we needed to do and what we wanted to do. Leading up to Allen, the ball didn’t roll our way.”

With 4.54 speed and a 6-2, 195-pound frame, Davis is the type of big-body receiver that SMU needs to add to the roster in this class. “I’m a big receiver, strong and strong hands that can really move.” Davis doesn’t have a visit planned to SMU at this time.
