Anderson picks up another early offer

By: Demetrio Teniente

Jack Anderson (pictured above) prides himself on being a big, mean, and nasty offensive lineman.

At 6’4” 280 pounds, this 2017 Frisco center is just that.

“I just think my level of nastiness is higher,” Anderson said. “I’m pretty blue collar- put my hand in the ground and get out and hurt some people. If you watch my film and compare it to some other kids- I think I’m a lot more physical.”

Anderson isn’t the only one who thinks so; right now he holds around nine offers, including New Mexico, New Mexico State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma St. TCU, Arizona St, and now SMU.

SMU assistant coaches Dustin Fry and Joe Craddock jumped on a conference call with the sophomore and informed him that SMU wanted to offer him. Anderson, almost immediately connected with Fry.

“(The call) was good,” Anderson said. “Coach Fry is a very relatable guy for me. He’s pretty young and we both have a similar playing style so I think it could be a lot of fun playing for him. I’m really excited for them. I know it’s going to be a good program here shortly.”

Anderson can see the work head coach Chad Morris and his staff is putting into rebuilding the program and thinks they will see dividends soon.

“They got a lot of recruits that I like,” he said. “And coach Fry says they’ll be working on their facilities and the stadium. I think once the fans can get into the games a lot more, it can be more exciting- because I know the past couple years the fans haven’t been too into football. I think it will be interesting to see what happens next year.”

Anderson knows that SMU is coming off a one-win season, but thinks it’s only a matter of time before they turn things around.

“I think eventually, they will get to a very competitive level,” he says. “I don’t know what the future holds, but I think they will be a great program. They still have a lot of work to do though.”

He hasn’t yet decided on a date, but he says he and coach Fry are discussing when he should drop by the Hilltop for a visit. It might also be worth noting that Anderson’s mother is an SMU alum.

Kaufman talks in-home visit from Staff

By:

The new SMU football staff has already shown SMU fans they’re willing to recruit aggressively, making double-digit trips to high schools in the DFW area just in their first few days on the job.

While filling up the Mustangs’ 2015 class is obviously important, Chad Morris and the staff have also focused on reaching out to a number of SMU commits, and one of those players was Highland Park (Tex.) High School linebacker Mitchell Kaufman.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound linebacker received an in-home visit from new linebacker’s coach Archie McDaniel and defensive back’s coach Jess Loepp, which helped reaffirm why he decided to commit to SMU in the first place.

“It was fun to meet them finally,” Kaufman said. “I was obviously interested in seeing who would be my coach and he (McDaniel) was a great guy. He said he’s pretty excited to coach me, and he had known about me at New Mexico where he was, so he was excited to meet me.”

Head Coach Chad Morris was not in attendance for the in-home visit, but when Kaufman heard he had been hired at SMU, he was more than happy with the decision.

“I was excited to hear he (Coach Morris) had been hired,” Kaufman said. “He’s a high-profile guy and it’s an exciting time to be a Mustang now.”

Chad Morris and his staff have only been on the job for 11 days, but even Kaufman has noticed a difference between the new and old staff when it comes to recruiting.

“They hit it hard,” Kaufman said. “I’ve had three coaches come to me, and one come to school the first day that they got the job so that’s fun to see.”

Given how busy a week it has been for new defensive coordinator Van Malone on the recruiting trail, and Kaufman with his school basketball tournament, the two have yet to make contact but Kaufman is looking forward to meeting him in the near future.

Kaufman plans to take his one and only official visit to SMU in January, but the linebacker’s family has season tickets for football and basketball, so he has already had a number of opportunities to visit and explore his new home.

Omotosho Honored to Get offer

By: Andrew Hattersley

Adewale Omotosho, 2016 Plano East WR, received a visit this past week by new SMU assistant coach Justin Stepp, who watched him work out and do everything the wide receiver wanted to do.

“It honestly is a blessing and a great privilege because I still have a lot of time, and its actually my third offer so hopefully one of the first of many and I’m just excited to learn more about the program,” said Omotosho

The 6’3 180 pound Plano receiver says while proximity isn’t a priority for him, it would be nice to stay close to home.

“I wouldn’t say proximity is one of the major issues of mine but it would be pretty nice to stay close by in case my mom needs anything,” said Omotosho, who is looking to schedule a visit in the near future.

While Omotosho is still a year away from possibly being a part of this team, he is already encouraged by what he’s seen from new SMU Head Coach Chad Morris.

“SMU as a whole, they’re building a lot, they got a new coach, so everything seems to be shaping up so who knows how much progress will be made over the coming seasons,” said Omotosho.

One of the things the Plano East receiver takes the most pride in is his ability to be a versatile receiver.

“I take pride in blocking, as well as the little things it takes to be a receiver, I practice a lot on my release, running my route, making sure I’m seeing things, and then I like to go deep, catch the short ball and make some plays,” said Omotosho.

The Plano East receiver has received an impressive amount of interest including offers from Arkansas State and Duke, as well as visits by TCU, Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

Gailliard gets in-home visit from Stepp, Craddock

By: Billy Embody

2015 SMU commit Myron Gailliard has already met Chad Morris on his first day visiting schools, but got an in-home visit last night from SMU assistants Justin Stepp and Joe Craddock.

“It was great, it was great. Got to talk to coach Stepp for the first time and it was awesome,” Gailliard said. “Coach Stepp and coach Craddock are both great men.”

“They just said that they’re ready and excited to work with me and stuff,” Gailliard said. “From being with my parents and what not, they know that I’m well taken care of and they’re excited.”

Morris reconfirmed Gailliard’s offer during his visit and that was a huge relief, but it was an even greater relief that he’s in good hands with the staff.

“We just talked as if we were just friends. We had a good conversation about just everything really,” the District 14-5A MVP said. “We touched on a few things like academics and stuff like that and with football there was very little talked about we were just getting to know each other and talking about the future and what’s at stake. We just talked about the fast pace they were trying to bring.”

Gailliard had heard a lot about Stepp, but was told to be ready to go when he steps on campus. “He told me be ready to work because I’m going to get 100 percent out of him and that’s great to hear from coaches,” Gailliard said. “He’s going to push me to my limits and I’m just ready to work with him. It’s awesome to be able to work with a guy like that.”

If Gailliard can pick up the playbook, there’s a chance he could see the field early too.

“They just said they’re not afraid to play freshmen,” the 5-9, 160-pound receiver said. “All I’ve got to do is really understand the formations and play schemes. If I understand the play schemes and what not, that’s really it.”

The visit didn’t consist of much football talk, but instead getting to know each other.

“Just how great of people they are. Just listening to them talk about their life,” Gailliard said. “It was a relief to know they’re just really great people. Just hearing where they came from and what not it was awesome.”

Gailliard’s parents were equally impressed with the visit.

“They love the fact of how good of men they are and they’re men of Christ. Just that I’m in good hands with them,” Gailliard said. “My parents have strong academics from Yale and knowing that the coaches are too they’re not worried that they’re going to keep track of me.”

Specifically, Stepp talked about his academic plans for his players.

“Coach Stepp told me about this thing he’s got going where he keeps track of all my assignments and everything I’m doing in school and outside of school so he knows what’s going on,” the two-star prospect said. “He’ll give a little reminder about assignments and what I’ve got due so he’s focusing on academics.”

Knowing that his coach is looking out for him showed Gailliard just the type of men Stepp and Craddock are.

“It’s great because it shows he’s not looking at what I can do for him,” Gailliard said. “He’s also looking at what I can do as a person and that’s great.”

Gailliard is set to visit SMU on a big weekend of visits, Jan 23rd-24th. Gailliard is excited to meet the other commits as well as prospects on campus.

“ Having us all on the same visit, it’ll just help us build a brotherhood so we can build that early so going into the season it’s not something we have to deal with,” Gailliard said. “It’s already there and we get a head start on the season.”

Fuller talks SMU offer

By: Scott Sanford

The new SMU football staff has focused on recruiting as a whole since taking the job almost two weeks ago.

The coaching staff has offered a plethora of guys in the 2015 class, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t already looking towards the 2016 class.

While the coaching staff was on the road making their trips to high schools last week, new wide receivers coach Justin Stepp stopped by Lovejoy High School (Tex.) where he met with 2016 wideout Aaron Fuller.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Fuller had been recruited by June Jones and his staff, but their wasn’t much of a relationship there.

“It was alright,” Fuller said about his relationship with the old coaching staff. “We didn’t talk to much. It was mostly just mail and stuff like that.”

Fuller’s meeting with Coach Stepp went well and the wide receivers coach told him to expect more interest from SMU.

“He just told me that my offer still stood and that he wanted me to come down to visit a couple of times this year, like in spring,” Fuller said. “That was my first time meeting him but he’s pretty cool. He gave me his number so I’ll probably keep in touch with him.”

Fuller wasn’t high on SMU when the old coaching staff was still in place, but after Chad Morris was hired, Fuller took notice.

“I liked it (the hire) because Coach (Chad) Morris knows our Coach (Ryan) Priem our OC so the offenses are very similar,” Fuller said. “So I would already know what to expect if I went there then.”

Fuller has a sister who goes to SMU, so he’s pretty familiar with the Hilltop and has enjoyed his time there on visits.

“I just think it’s a nice campus,” Fuller said. “I like the team, I like how close the school is to my family and stuff like that.”

SMU was the only school to have offered Fuller until Wednesday when the junior received his second offer from Northwestern.

Fuller is also receiving interest from TCU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, and Purdue, among others.

The speedster is still only a junior, so he isn’t looking to commit until either the end of summer 2015 or following his senior season.

Williams gets in-home visit from Morris

By: Andrew Hattersley

SMU 2015 commit Cristian Williams, from Lincoln High School, met coach Morris for the first time Sunday and came away knowing he is a part of the teams future.

“When they offered me a scholarship, I was absolutely happy, I was really happy about it, my mom was really happy about it because she wants me to go there because it’s closer to home, it’s about 15 minutes away from my house actually,” the 6-0, 170-pound safety said. “To see her face, and her smile to see me get a full ride scholarship made me happy actually, and I made my mom proud about it.”

Williams was not only pleased with getting offered the scholarship, but also the person that Morris is.

“He is very down to earth, his talk wasn’t really about the school, it was about making me a better man and how I would change as I get there, when I get there I’m not going to be the same person I am today,” said Williams.

Williams continued that he is ready to spend four years on the hilltop and see how much growth he undergoes.

“I am going to improve someway, somehow, in some form or fashion and he’s going to make me a better man in life, and it was really wasn’t about football, at the end he was saying my four years at SMU will change my life forever. I’m just ready for it,” said Williams.

The Lincoln safety also said he has a strong relationship with all the current commits and can’t wait to visit with them January 23rd.

“We talk everyday, we actually have a group message and we talk to each other every day about everything,” said Williams, “We’ve actually developed a great bond together like we’re all going to this game this Saturday, Skyline versus Allen. I’ll get a chance to meet all of them in person,”

Williams will attend the game with Michael Scott, Delontae Scott, Marcus McNeil, Marvis Brown, Hunter Herdon and Lamont Johnson.

The 2015 commit also put away any doubt he was looking anywhere else when talking about what type of education he could receive at SMU.

“I can’t wait to graduate from SMU, I hear from everybody there that anybody that graduates from SMU that when I graduate Ican basically get any job that I want,” said Williams, “I will be going there for a business major, I’m just ready to get this over with so I can get this over with and get ready.”

Johnson gets visit from McDaniel

By: Billy Embody

SMU commit Lamont Johnson got a visit this week from SMU assistant Archie McDaniel, who put his concerns about being a part of the 2015 class to rest.

“We talked about the scholarship standing and how there’s going to be changes with the new coaches,” Johnson said. “He’s a really good person and a cool dude.”

Johnson talked with McDaniel about Chad Morris’ bringing in a new era of football and the changes.

“I think he’s going to change a lot of things with the program. Everything is just going to be twice as better, maybe more,” Johnson said.

When Johnson arrives on the Hilltop, he knows his work is just beginning though.

“I’m very excited. Hopefully I play as well as I can when I get up there,” the South Oak Cliff receiver said. “I’ve got to take care of business. I’m excited for the offense.”

Johnson is visiting Jan. 23 along with the rest of the 2015 class and is excited about the class that Morris is putting together.

“With all the other commits we’ve got a group message right now,” Johnson said. “We’re really trying to stick together, keeping everybody together because we know when we’re freshmen we want to stick together and know each other a little bit more. That’s going to help us even more once we get to campus.”

Morris is going to have his work cut out for him, but Johnson sees a big difference in 2015.

“I just hope and believe there’s going to be a lot of good changes next year,” Johnson said. “Everybody is talking about it so we’re truly excited. I wish I could take an official every weekend.”

Johnson took time to talk about his senior year that didn’t end the way he wanted it to, but is now focusing on getting ready for his arrival at SMU.

“It was a great year. We could have kept going all the way, but it had to stop eventually,” Johnson said. “For me improving, I just want to get stronger and get better with catching with my hands.”

Sells gets visit from Stepp

By: Demetrio Teniente

With Chad Morris coming to SMU and blazing through the recruiting path, its easy to overlook the guys he recruited while still at Clemson.

What happens to all the guys Morris was in charge of recruiting and what do those players think about him becoming a Mustang?

For 2016 Lovejoy quarterback Bowman Sells, nothing has changed but location.

“I’m happy for him,” the 6-3, 200-pound junior said. “I have a good relationship with him so I’m looking forward to catching up with him soon. And I’m definitely going to be looking at SMU now because I really like him as a coach and the staff he is putting together…I like what they are doing.”

As it stands right now, Sells holds offers from Clemson, Ohio St, Iowa, and Colorado St.

The southpaw has yet to be offered anything from SMU, but it’s still pretty early in his recruitment by Morris’ staff on the Hilltop.

Assistant coach Justin Stepp has taken the lead (for now at least) in Sells SMU recruitment and visited the quarterback in Allen, TX last week.

“It was good,” Sells said. “He just came in to let me know that Morris is still interested in me, so all good stuff.”

Sells has a lot of respect for Morris and expressed a desire to play in his offense in the future.

”I think (SMU’s interest) is pretty high because coach Morris was pretty interested in me at Clemson,” Sells said. “But I haven’t talked with Morris since he started at SMU. We talked quite a bit and a visited a couple of times. We had a pretty good relationship, so I hope we keep communicating. Once I talk to him, hopefully we pick up where we left off.”

The 2015 commit also put away any doubt he was looking anywhere else when talking about what type of education he could receive at SMU. \r\n

“I can’t wait to graduate from SMU, I hear from everybody there that anybody that graduates from SMU that when I graduate Ican basically get any job that I want,” said Williams, “I will be going there for a business major, I’m just ready to get this over with so I can get this over with and get ready.”\r\n

SMU commit Lamont Johnson got a visit this week from SMU assistant Archie McDaniel, who put his concerns about being a part of the 2015 class to rest.\r\n

“We talked about the scholarship standing and how there’s going to be changes with the new coaches,” Johnson said. “He’s a really good person and a cool dude.”\r\n

Johnson talked with McDaniel about Chad Morris’ bringing in a new era of football and the changes.\r\n

“I think he’s going to change a lot of things with the program. Everything is just going to be twice as better, maybe more,” Johnson said.\r\n

When Johnson arrives on the Hilltop, he knows his work is just beginning though.\r\n

“I’m very excited. Hopefully I play as well as I can when I get up there,” the South Oak Cliff receiver said. “I’ve got to take care of business. I’m excited for the offense.”\r\n

Johnson is visiting Jan. 23 along with the rest of the 2015 class and is excited about the class that Morris is putting together.\r\n

“With all the other commits we’ve got a group message right now,” Johnson said. “We’re really trying to stick together, keeping everybody together because we know when we’re freshmen we want to stick together and know each other a little bit more. That’s going to help us even more once we get to campus.”\r\n

Morris is going to have his work cut out for him, but Johnson sees a big difference in 2015.\r\n

“I just hope and believe there’s going to be a lot of good changes next year,” Johnson said. “Everybody is talking about it so we’re truly excited. I wish I could take an official every weekend.”\r\n

Johnson took time to talk about his senior year that didn’t end the way he wanted it to, but is now focusing on getting ready for his arrival at SMU.\r\n

“It was a great year. We could have kept going all the way, but it had to stop eventually,” Johnson said. “For me improving, I just want to get stronger and get better with catching with my hands.”\r\n

Sells gets visit from Stepp

With Chad Morris coming to SMU and blazing through the recruiting path, its easy to overlook the guys he recruited while still at Clemson.\r\n

What happens to all the guys Morris was in charge of recruiting and what do those players think about him becoming a Mustang?\r\n

For 2016 Lovejoy quarterback Bowman Sells, nothing has changed but location. \r\n

“I’m happy for him,” the 6-3, 200-pound junior said. “I have a good relationship with him so I’m looking forward to catching up with him soon. And I’m definitely going to be looking at SMU now because I really like him as a coach and the staff he is putting together…I like what they are doing.”\r\n

As it stands right now, Sells holds offers from Clemson, Ohio St, Iowa, and Colorado St.\r\n

The southpaw has yet to be offered anything from SMU, but it’s still pretty early in his recruitment by Morris’ staff on the Hilltop. \r\n

Assistant coach Justin Stepp has taken the lead (for now at least) in Sells SMU recruitment and visited the quarterback in Allen, TX last week. \r\n

“It was good,” Sells said. “He just came in to let me know that Morris is still interested in me, so all good stuff.” \r\n

Sells has a lot of respect for Morris and expressed a desire to play in his offense in the future. \r\n

Once I talk to him, hopefully we pick up where we left off.”\r\n

I picked up offer #10 last night from SMU! #PonyUp?? ????

— Jack Anderson5?3? (@JackAnderson_53) December 6, 2014

Blessed to say I have picked up my third offer from #SMU ! #PonyUp pic.twitter.com/cJon05zaYq

— YUNGSUAVE (@AudieOsho10) December 9, 2014

The visit went great today! Blessed to be under these two great men! #PonyUp?????? @CoachCraddock @coachjstepp pic.twitter.com/dcxw9C6VPD

— Myron Gailliard (@District___9) December 12, 2014
