How it Happened
SMU led almost the entire game and after a few misses around the basket, Markus Kennedy got hot en route to 13 first half points and three rebounds to give SMU a 34-21 lead. Keith Frazier also had a productive first half, adding seven points and three rebounds. Frazier hit a three to end the first half that really hurt Memphis.
SMU made a free throw to start the second half then added a Yanick Moreira alley oop that got the Mustangs going on offense a little bit. The team didn’t blow the doors off the game, but tightened down when they needed to defensively en route to getting the 73-59 win.
What it Means
SMU rebounded from their tough road outing against Cincinnati and got a nice win over a struggling, yet talented Memphis team. SMU showed some physicality and grit to fight off a few Memphis runs and get the win.
Player of the Game
Markus Kennedy: The big man finally showed out with his season-highs in points (21) while adding three rebounds. Kennedy got SMU going in the first half with 13 points. Kennedy got a nice welcome back from the Moody crowd for his efforts.
SMU big men Yanick Moreira, Markus Kennedy and Ben Moore combined for SMU’s best frontcourt performance of the year totaling 48 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks. SMU also led for all, but 21 seconds of the game. Impressive win tonight.
SMU hits the road for two straight; a Sunday game at UCF at 1 p.m. CT (CBSSN) and a game at Temple on Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. CT (CBSSN).
