BREAKING: Maligi has taken leave

Pony Stampede has confirmed that SMU assistant coach Ulric Maligi has taken an indefinite leave.

SMU assistant basketball coach Ulric Maligi has taken "indefinite" leave.

SMU Sr. Associate A.D./Public Relations & Marketing Brad Sutton said the matter concerning the details around Maligi's leave is a "private matter."

"He's on leave. We're going to respect his privacy while he's away," Sutton said. "That's all we have to say. Again, it's a private matter."

Sources have told Pony Stampede that Maligi is on paid leave and it's likely that Maligi will part ways with SMU at the end of the season. SMU would not confirm whether Maligi is on paid leave.

Maligi was not on the bench for SMU's win Sunday over UCF and a team source did confirm that Maligi is not with the team in Philadelphia. The team flew from Orlando to Philadelphia for their Wednesday matchup against Temple following the UCF win since school is not in session.

Maligi is responsible for SMU signing back-to-back McDonald's All-Americans Keith Frazier in 2013 and Emmanuel Mudiay in 2014 although Mudiay opted to turn pro and not attend SMU.

SMU's matchup with Temple is slated for Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network.
