2015 Robinson HS (Tex.) linebacker Matt McNew had been waiting for an offer like the one he got from SMU two weeks ago, and once he got it, it didn’t take him long to commit.
“Coach Morris and everything he was saying, I really want to be a part of it, the academic side, its one of the best in the country and that’s what made me want to commit and want to come here,” said McNew.
The 6-2, 215-pound linebacker had offers form New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northwestern State, Air Force, Navy, and Army but ultimately felt SMU’s coaching staff was simply the best fit for him.
“The coaching staff, every one of them is top notch, very good people, role models, guys you want to be with, learn from, and the university, it’s going up now, it’s not going down anymore, it’s going up and its going to be special,” said McNew.
McNew was also on hand to take in SMU’s 77-54 victory over East Carolina Saturday afternoon, and came away very excited about the fans at SMU.
“It was great, the fans were crazy, and awesome and the basketball team actually beat them pretty good so it was really a fun experience,” said McNew.
One of the big questions with McNew is where he will play in college. The Robinson linebacker has played both inside linebacker and outside linebacker in high school and feels ready for wherever the coaching staff asks him to play.
“My freshman year I played outside linebacker, my sophomore through senior year I’ve been an inside linebacker,” said McNew, “I’ve definitely worked inside linebacker and would definitely be interested in playing it in college if the opportunity comes up that I could play there.”
McNew led Robinson in tackles last season in one of the better seasons they have experienced in a while.
