POSITION RANKING: #48 overall, #3 in Texas.
SENIOR YEAR STATS: Played quarter back his senior year.
COMMITTED TO SMU OVER:Oklahoma, Rice, New Mexico and North Texas.
SIDE NOTE: In his spare time, Herndon likes to hunt and fish and is a proud East Texan.
AUDIBLE: “It’s an honor, I’m extremely excited about getting on the field and showing the nation who I can be.”
How Herndon fits
Herndon fits about as perfectly as Chad Morris could have dreamed. A 6-2, 240-pound H-back/tight end that can put on more weight if needed. Morris was missing that H-back in his offense, but expect Herndon to come in right away and start.
What Herndon brings
A physical, gritty style to the offense. With Herndon being the likely starting H-back/tight end, he’ll bring a shot in the arm to the offense in a physical sense. Herndon will be slipped out into the flat on play action, brought over the middle out of the slot and utilized as a lead blocker among other things.
What to Expect Freshman Year
Expect Herndon to start against Baylor week 1. That’s the talent level this kid has and he’s got to fill a big need in Morris’ up-tempo offense. While there may be an adjustment period (SMU is opening against Baylor), Herndon figures to be in the running for a freshmen All-AAC team.
Career Expectations for Herndon
Herndon could be one of the first of Morris’ players in the NFL. I’m not saying we’ve got the next Dwayne Allen at SMU, but Herndon has the athleticism and smarts to pick up the offense, be a four-year starter and could impress enough to earn some All-AAC attention during his time at SMU. That could lead to some NFL opportunities for this versatile player.
