POSITION RANKING: #247 overall
COMMITTED TO SMU OVER: Stephen F. Austin, Nazy, New Mexico State, and Louisiana-Monroe.
SIDE NOTE: Is a collector of old train pieces.
AUDIBLE: It’s amazing to join the SMU family.
How Bates fits
SMU is just now getting to the point where its offensive line is experienced. It will be interesting to see if any of the new comers fight for spots with any of the veterans. Watching Bates’ film, he seems like he has what it takes to be a contributor. I’m just not sure how soon he will.
What Bates brings
He definitely can deliver some hits on runs. I think it’s the best part of his game. He is 6’3” 235 pounds. Obviously we’d like him to be heavier, but his athleticism right now allows him to get to the next level and blow up smaller linebackers and defensive backs.
What to Expect Freshman Year
I think we can expect to see very little from him and that’s not against him, just more of a realistic look at the roster and the limited opportunities for an undersized lineman coming into a program with a veteran o-line.
Career Expectations for Bates
If he can add some good, solid weight, I think he will have a solid career at SMU. His athleticism for the position makes him an above average run blocker. I just want to see if he can get better at pass protection and if he can be successful against bigger, better athletes.
