Video Breakdown: Kevin Thomas
POSITION RANKING: WR Rank: 61
SENIOR YEAR STATS: 44 catches, 681 yards and eight touchdowns.
COMMITTED TO SMU OVER: Clemson, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Nebraska, San Diego State and Wisconsin.
SIDE NOTE: Thomas hopes to major in communications while at SMU because it’s something he wants to pursue following his football career.
AUDIBLE: “I know it hasn’t been that long, but they (the coaches) feel like they’ve been together forever,” Thomas said. “The vibe that the coaches give off is amazing.”
How Kevin Thomas fitsThomas is the type of receiver that will fit perfectly in Chad Morris’ up-tempo offense. The DeSoto product will see some early playing time, especially with Der’rikk Thompson graduating and just two receivers on the roster measuring in taller than him. Thomas’ speed and play-making ability will undoubtedly be assets to the Mustangs.
What Kevin Thomas bringsThe 6-foot-1, 175-pound Thomas is a developed receiver that uses his long arms and big hands to make some hard catches look easy. Overall, Thomas makes this SMU receiving core much more athletic and capable of breaking big plays when needed.
What to Expect Freshman YearThomas comes in and immediately has to be considered one of the Mustangs top receivers. As long as there aren’t any set backs during the summer or training camp, I fully expect Thomas to contribute at the start of his freshman year. He’ll have to earn it, but with his talent, it’s hard to imagine Thomas not receiving significant playing time by the end of the year.
Career Expectations for Kevin ThomasIf Thomas can develop a nice bond with fellow freshman quarterback Ben Hicks early on, there’s no doubt that after four years the two could become quite the duo. Expect improved numbers every season, and Thomas to become a leader alongside fellow DeSoto receiver James Proche.
