How Mitchell Kaufman fitsThe Mustangs pick up some nice depth at the linebacker position with the additions of Kaufman and Austin Corbett. Kaufman needs to add some weight before he can contribute, but with guys like Jonathan Yenga and Robert Seals returning, Kaufman will have some time before being counted on.
What Mitchell Kaufman bringsKaufman is a student of the game. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder has nice range and athleticism, plus his good instincts make up for his lack of elite speed. Kaufman does a great job of sniffing out the screen passes and either making a play on the ball or intercepting the pass. Kaufman also does a solid job of dropping back into coverage and using his athleticism to stay with receivers or tight ends he ends up on.
What to Expect Freshman YearDon’t be surprised to see Kaufman contribute on special teams as a freshman. Kaufman needs to add some size before making a contribution on the defensive side of the ball, but the Highland Park product has the athleticism to make some plays on special teams.
Career Expectations for Mitchell KaufmanI expect, down the line, for Kaufman to be a formidable linebacker for the Mustangs. At this point, he’s really only missing 20-25 pounds, but once he is able to put that muscle on, he has the athleticism and instincts to really be a contributor.
