How it Happened
SMU struggled to make baskets all night-long, and despite their best effort the Mustangs couldn’t squeak out a win, falling to Cincinnati 62 to 54. Moody was full and Moody was loud….until the last 40 seconds when they all but completely abandoned their team.
What it Means
SMU winning streak of eight games came to an end and their hunt for the top spot in the American Athletic Conference now hangs in the balance. Saturday’s game against Tulsa just got even more important- as if the stakes weren’t high enough already.
Player of the Game
Cannen Cunningham : One of the best things about this team during its stretch of wins is that it has been a different player every knight leading the charge. Thursday night, it was Cunningham’s turn to play hero. Every time SMU needed a bucket he delivered. Cunningham finished with 14 points and three rebounds. It just wasn’t enough to get the win.
SMU managed to force 13 turnovers during the first half and 17 total. Nine of those turnovers were steals. The Mustangs shot an abysmal 40/7 percent in the first half but it was SMU’s tenacity on the defensive end compensated for their lack of shooting and allowed them to compete with Cincinnati down the stretch.
The Mustangs will travel to Tulsa to battle the AAC leaders. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m and the action will be broadcast on ESPNU (ESPN2)
