How it Happened
It was back and forth early, but SMU got its first win in seven tries in Memphis after a big second half. Nic Moore made some huge shots in the second half and the team took advantage of Memphis’ foul troubles to grab the win. Shaq Goodwin’s best game in a while against SMU wasn’t enough as Austin Nichols struggled mightily.
What it Means
SMU got the win that should clinch their NCAA tournament big. The win in Memphis also went a long way to securing a regular season AAC title for SMU. The Mustangs still have Connecticut Sunday and Tulsa at home in just over a week, but things are looking up after SMU’s first win in Memphis after seven straight Tigers’ wins in Memphis over SMU.
Player of the Game
Sterling Brown: Sterling Brown stepped up in a huge way defensively for SMU and contributed early with two three-pointers. Brown didn’t wow anyone when you looked at the stat line, but played incredible defense and that was the difference for SMU.
SMU was outscored 18-10 at the half inside the paint, but closed the gap against Memphis 16-18 in the second half in the paint. SMU didn’t win the points in the paint battle, but made a statement in the second half with their play in the paint.
SMU visits Connecticut in Hartford on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. CT on CBS.
