Commitment Analysis: David Moore to SMU!

Patrick breaks down Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton 3-star QB David Moore's decision to Pony Up with SMU!

SMU found its quarterback for 2016 when Alpharetta (Ga.) Milton’s David Moore committed to the Mustangs Thursday afternoon. He chose SMU over Utah, Wake Forest, Houston and Colorado State.

Why he committed

Moore had 17 offers, and while SMU was one of the last schools to offer him, he’s had a great relationship with the SMU coaches since they recruited him while at Clemson. When he tweeted about his offer from SMU in early April, he said he was “excited to receive an offer from my family down in Dallas.” Moore is a DFW native who played his first two years at north suburban Prosper High and knows some members of SMU’s 2015 signing class. Ultimately, he couldn’t pass up a chance to play for the staff that knows him best or the chance to play in Texas again.

Why he fits

Moore is mobile with good feet, but he’s a pass-first quarterback all day. He has an excellent arm and can drive crisp and accurate throws down the field. He’s a good athlete who moves around the pocket well, although could use some work while throwing under pressure. Moore is a near-perfect fit for Chad Morris’ offense thanks to his athleticism, ability to move in the pocket and strong arm. He’ll have time to settle in and add some weight to his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame once he arrives on campus.

What it means for the 2016 class

While SMU has room to take two quarterbacks for 2016, the staff seems content with just Moore at the position. And that’s not a problem at all given what Moore brings, plus Ben Hicks’ presence. Nothing is set in stone, but Bowman Sells might have to look elsewhere if the staff is completely set on taking just one quarterback.

What’s next for the 2016 class

Moore joins offensive tackle Braxton Webb and wide receiver Joshua Shelmire in SMU’s 2016 class. Expect to see a three or four more commits by the end of May, when the coaches have traveled around and seen players during the spring evaluation period. SMU should have five to seven commits entering the summer.
