After talking with SMU linebackers coach Archie McDaniel, Marchiol was offered.
“He said, we want you to come play here, you have an offer here and we want to recruit you hard,” Marchiol said. “I was excited because I really loved it up there and it was definitely one of my best visits so far and one of my favorites.”
The SMU visit was impressive for Marchiol because of his immediate relationship with McDaniel.
“The environment and being around the campus and in Dallas was great and I definitely think it’s a program on the rise,” Marchiol said. “I want to stay in contact with coach McDaniel because he was one of the coolest linebacker coaches I’ve talked with. He sat down and watched my film with me and it was awesome.”
McDaniel sat with Marchiol and broke down his film and talked about where he could fit in SMU’s scheme.
“He was just so easy to talk to and he pointed out certain areas of my game that he really liked. He liked my body type that it’s long and lean and will fit in there system,” Marchiol said. “I had never previously talked with him and I just new he was a good guy from how much time he spent with someone he had never previously talked to from a state that they don’t even recruit.”
SMU head coach Chad Morris was still in Clemson following his daughter’s high school graduation, but Marchiol and his family met just about all the coaches.
“It’s a new staff in there and new to the program, but they’re excited to be there and get it rolling. I think they’ll be good these next few years,” Marchiol said.
Marchiol has had his eye on SMU for quite sometime now.
“I love Dallas. I’ve come down here to play in a bunch of different all-star games and I’ve wanted to go to SMU’s campus because they have the best business school in the nation and that’s what I want to study,” the 6-3, 222-pound linebacker said. “That will be a big consideration for me going forward.
The work being done to improve the football facilities plus, SMU’s campus were a big selling point too.
“It was great seeing how beautiful the campus and stadium is plus all the renovations they’re doing,” Marchiol said. “They said all the renovations and building will be done by the time I’m there in 2017.”
“It’s been a great spring so far and SMU is definitely one of my favorites. I loved it out there and made sure the coaches knew that.”
Marchiol doesn’t have a timeline, but will talk with his family about it more.
“Whenever I find the place that I really like and want to commit to, then that will happen,” Marchiol said. “I just like enjoying the process right now and soaking it all up.”
SMU has offered Marchiol at their Will linebacker position, where Marchiol would fit well based on his ability to cover — Marchiol notched five interceptions last year.
“Playing fast and physical. I think I separate myself from others because I can cover slot receivers and be able to implement the pass coverage aspect and be effective in that,” Marchiol said “I think SMU’s 4-3 defense is a good fit for me.”
