The 6-foot-2 184-pound cornerback has yet to make an official visit, but says that he plans to change that within the near future. He says that he’s been in contact with secondary coach, Jess Loepp and linebackers coach Archie McDaniel, which has helped him become more comfortable and acclimated with SMU.
“I like that I have a mutual relationship with the coaches at SMU,” Mitchell said about the Mustangs’ coaching staff. “My high school cornerback coach is friends with coach Loepp and I can tell that they’re good friends. I think that knowing my coach is friends with the SMU coaches will help me a lot in making a decision, eventually.”
Along with SMU, Mitchell holds an offer from the University of South Dakota and says that the University of Houston and Nevada have also expressed interest in him. As of right now, Mitchell has SMU ranked No 2 in his top three.
”The University of Oregon has always been my favorite school, but now that I’ve been exposed to the recruiting game, my top choices have changed,” Mitchell said. “Right now, it’s Houston, SMU and Nevada.”
Despite the order, Mitchell says that SMU is still high on his priority list in terms of taking official visits and more.
”I plan on making SMU one of the first schools I visit this year,” Mitchell said. “I want to visit SMU within the month for an official visit and I would like my parents to join me on my trip there, too.”
Mitchell was a part of an Eagles team in 2014 that claimed a Class 6A Region 3 Area Championship and followed that performance up this spring by helping his team qualify for state 7-on-7 tournament recently, as Mitchell continues to perfect his craft.
Before the summer is over, Mitchell says he’d like to verbally commit, but only after he takes some official visits and attends camps. One of those camps is likely to be at SMU. Mitchell is currently looking at attending the July 25 or 26th camp.
Mitchell will be a name that will likely grow in popularity as the summer progresses, he’ll be a prospect that SMU will certainly continue to keep an eye on this summer.
