Recruitment

Inoke Ngalo picked SMU over Houston, North Texas and Hawaii after being committed to Houston at one point. The District 6-5A MVP in his senior year was a two-time first-team All-State selection. Tallied 102 tackles his senior year and averaged 12.8 tackles and 1.5 sacks per game. The previous staff flipped Ngalo just days before signing day after an official visit.

2014 Recap

Ngalo redshirted in 2014 with the depth SMU had at linebacker, it was no surprise. While SMU was decimated by injuries, Ngalo sat and watched. It's important to note that Ngalo impressed in practices during the spring, but didn't have too much of an impact in the spring game. That being said, Ngalo is a solid fit at the Leo linebacker position that saw Robert Seals get some time at. With Ngalo being a Taylor Reed-like player, that will be where he fits next opposite Nick Horton if he's going to challenge for a starting position. Ngalo has plenty of athleticism and can cover the field, but will he be physical enough to even hold down the weakside linebacker spot?
Grade: N/A

2015 Outlook

SMU is going from a 3-4 to a 4-2 look and that means two linebackers are responsible for more space. Ngalo will have to be ready to roll and fill holes for Van Malone's defense otherwise he'll find himself on the sidelines. SMU has been recruiting long, athletic linebackers and while Ngalo has the athleticism, he's lacking in length, which appears to be a priority for the staff. Ngalo has a knack for finding the ball though and especially in passing situations, his ability to run the field will serve him well. Fully expecting Ngalo to be a contributor this year on defense as some of the freshmen adjust to life on campus and put on weight as many of them are a little lean to see the field just yet in my mind.
