Pony Stampede has your rapid reaction to SMU vs. North Texas!
How it Happened
It wasn’t always pretty but the Mustangs pulled away for their first win under Chad Morris 31-13 over North Texas. It started out as a slow first half for both teams. SMU did not get off to a good start with a three and out followed by a botched punt that led to UNT’s first points of the game. After a nice 27 yard touchdown pass from Matt Davis to Courtland Sutton midway through the first quarter, they turned it over three more times in the second quarter. Despite these mistakes, the SMU defense held North Texas to just 120 yards in the first half. SMU continued to play strong defense in the second half and finally got the interception they had been waiting for off Andrew McNulty. The offense had a couple chances to punch it in during the third quarter but could only muster a field goal. After seeing UNT take the lead midway through the third quarter, SMU came right back with an impressive drive, capped off by a big touchdown catch from Jeremiah Gaines. SMU stretched it out after a fumble by Antoinne Jimmerson when Matt Davis broke multiple North Texas tackles and took it 50 yards for the touchdown. Matt Davis put the game away on the next drive with another rushing touchdown to put SMU up 31-13.
What it Means
SMU gets their first win under Chad Morris. This is a huge confidence builder for a team that has been working very hard during spring and fall camp to get better. Games like these provide results for them to build off in coming weeks. Equally important, they get a win under their belt before playing TCU. This takes a lot of pressure off the Mustangs heading into another matchup with a very talented TCU team.
Player of the Game
It was not always pretty for Davis and the offense tonight but he found a way to keep this offense moving. Davis didn’t have the cleanest game throwing the ball but used his legs as a weapon to put up close to 300 yards of offense including two rushing touchdowns and one throwing touchdown. Moving forward Davis has to protect the ball in the red zone a little better but it was a very solid performance for SMU’s leader once again.
SMU had three turnovers in the second quarter. The first was a fumble by Matt Davis at the one yard line. Shortly after Braeden West muffed a punt that led to UNT’s second field goal. SMU was driving again late in the quarter when Xavier Jones fumbled at the UNT 13 yard line.
