How it Happened
The triple option is tough to defend, but SMU got crushed on the ground, which Navy has done most of this year. Keenan Reynolds did what he does best and that's score touchdowns. It was 21-0 before anyone could blink. SMU didn't get a first down until a few posessions in. Navy was also ready to go from the start, but the performance overall was lackluster, sloppy and terrible. Navy could do whatever it wanted on the ground and the offense didn't help the defense at all. They were gassed chasing the Navy running backs.
What it Means
I thought this one would be ugly, but SMU was pretty inept in most phases of the game today. They had no answer on the ground and the scary thing is that it could have been much worse. It doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things. Navy is a much better football and that's really it.
Player of the Game
Xavier Jones. Don't know why Jones didn't get the ball more. Early in the fourth quarter, Jones had six carries for 33 yards. SMU trailed big for a lot of the game, but I feel like SMU got away from the run game when it should have pounded the ball a little more. Jones was on track for an okay day, but didn't get the ball enough. Jones finished with eight carries for 45 yards.
Navy didn't punt until 4:54 left in the third quarter when Navy went three and out. SMU really could have used some stops, but just couldn't get them. Navy was 4-4 on fourth downs.
SMU hosts Tulane next Saturday in the final home game of the year.
