Rapid Reaction: SMU vs. Brown

Billy has your rapid reaction to SMU's win over Brown in Moody Coliseum.

How it Happened

SMU and Brown came out firing in the first half. Both teams shot over 60 percent from the field well into the first half with SMU finishing 56 percent from the field in the half. SMU allowed a few too many looks from three-point land. Brown converted, going 9-of-17 shooting from beyond the arc. SMU meanwhile operated in and out of the paint with 18 points in the paint and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Keith Frazier really stepped up, having 17 points in the first half with Nic Moore out. Shake Milton looked solid running the show and SMU built a 48-37 halftime lead.

Both teams cooled down to start the second half, but SMU placed a bigger emphasis on points in the paint and defense. SMU got a big second half from Jarrey Foster, Jordan Tolbert helped out in a big way rebounding with 10 boards, and Markus Kennedy added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. SMU did let Brown hang around for the game, but made plays down the stretch to improve to 4-0 on the year. Frazier made two key free throws after a Foster dunk and Brown miss to put SMU up 76-67 and ice the game.

What it Means

SMU had its depth tested a little bit today and will for the next few games if Ben's suspension is on the longer side. Nic's injury could also test SMU's depth even more if it's more serious than originally believed. SMU got its first extended look at Sedrick Barefield off the bench and had mixed results. Barefield looked comfortable and got to the rim, but finished 0-4 from the field with four rebounds and an assist. Milton meanwhile, had a solid game running the offense with seven assists on the day along with seven points.

Player of the Game

Keith FrazierThe Dallas native stepped up with 17 points in the first half, but wasn't done. With Nic out, Frazier's outside shooting and solid defense helped SMU keep pace with Brown early. Frazier finished with 23 points, five rebounds and three assists.

Side Note

SMU lacked serious depth today with Ben Moore and Nic Moore out. Tim Jankovich brought in Jonathan Wilfong a little over half way through the first half. Wilfong also came into the game about half way through the second half again. Wilfong recorded a rebound and a foul.
