SENIOR YEAR STATS: 222 carries, 1,566 yards, 22 TD
COMMITTED TO SMU OVER: Thomas flipped his commitment from Nebraska. He also held offers from Colorado State, Kansas, Nevada and Texas State.

How Thomas fits

Thomas played in an offense that runs out of the shotgun and uses some similar concepts to SMU in the running game, such as inside zone runs. He isn’t a one-cut and get upfield runner like Xavier Jones and Braeden West, so he adds a different running style to SMU’s backfield.

What Thomas brings

Vision and start-and-stop ability. Thomas understands when to be patient and wait for a play to develop and when to bounce a run in a different direction if a hole isn’t where he should be. In the open field, Thomas isn’t a true burner, but he can shed tackles while keeping his forward momentum and shoulders downfield. He keeps his pads low while running as well.

What to Expect Freshman Year

Thomas seems one of the safer bets to play as a freshman. Behind Jones and West, SMU’s backfield depth is pretty thin. Combine the need for depth and Thomas’ experience in a similar offense and he has an opportunity to crack the running back rotation.

Career Expectations for Thomas

Jones’ presence may limit him from being a feature back for most of his career, but the two would form a good combo and good mix of running styles.
