Demo: Joshua Shelmire
While he may not be the best receiver, I do think Joshua Shelmire is the best receiver for SMU. I really like the way he makes things happen after the catch. He’s very creative once he grabs the ball and he knows how to find room to work off of bubble and tunnel screens. He’s clocked in at just 4.60 on his 40, but he must be one of those guys that performs better in an actual game, because he seems much faster than a 4.60 receiver. He’s also 6-2 180 pounds—that’s a pretty good size. So bottom line: I like his physicality and creativeness after the catch.
Hatts: Brandon Benson
SMU is already amassing a deep wide receiving group and is about to add another extremely talented receiver to the mix. Benson really runs his routes crisply and sets up defensive backs well on double moves. This allows him to be a constant deep threat but also make catches underneath. When making catches short he also excels at making defenders miss with good cuts to the inside. Benson was a big reason La Vega won a state title last season and should help turn the Mustangs into a winner in short order if he keeps this up.
